We specialise in School Incursions. Our program is adaptable
to accommodate Pre-Primary through to High School.
An Incursion costs $220 per single Class, ( or $195 each when two Classes or more are booked).
The Incursions are conducted by Vermiculture Expert, Kevin Smith. Kevin has been teaching children
all about the incredible worms, for the past nine years.
Each session lasts an hour and includes an informative and entertaining power point presentation
covering topics such as:
WORMS!!
The Environment
Worm's role
in Waste
Management
Recycling
Worm
Biology
Sustainability
Mini
beasts
Gardening
The power
point presentation is followed by a Question & Answer session, whereby
students are encouraged to participate in an open forum.
We bring masses of wriggling worms for the kids (and teachers!) to get up close and personal with the worms in
the very popular hands-in activity.
Each student gets to
make their own mini worm farm to keep.
Students can keep them in class to observe over 1 to 2 weeks,
or take them home to show their mums & dads.
Each child will need a clear 1.5 or 2 litre
cooldrink or cordial bottle with the necks cut off.
Alternatively,
instead of making individual mini worm farms, you may decide to make a 'Worm Observation Unit'
for the Classroom. You will be required to provide a
small aquarium (or similar) (approx. size 30cmL x 25cmW x 25cmH) which
will be used to make the Observation Unit. This can then be kept in Class
and observed over 1 to 2 weeks
.
Note: you
can make both individual student worm farms & the Class observation unit for an extra charge.
We bring all the
necessary equipment, i.e projector, screen, laptop and all the materials
required to make the mini worm farms.
You only
need to supply a bottle for each student (or aquarium, if doing 'Worm
Observation Unit').
We provide activity worksheets for on-going class work. There
is a worksheet specific to the mini worm farms.
As these Incursions are extremely popular, it pays to get your booking in early
to ensure your preferred dates.
As the saying goes, "the early bird catches the worm"!!
Some Local Government bodies are offering subsidies towards
Incursions for Schools in their municipality. The City of Stirling provide a subsidy for one
class per School per year.
What the teachers and kids have to say about
us.
"Thank you very much for your informative sessions about worms. The children thoroughly enjoyed making their mini worm farms and learning about the red worm.
Roxine Smith, Success Primary School
" The level of engagement was very impressive. I can't get my students to put their worm farms down. This has been very beneficial for the students at this school".
Jon Veitch, Yr 5/6/7, Southwell Primary School
"The kids have been buzzing - they absolutely loved it.
Kevin was wonderful and the class teacher, who has been teaching for 12 years, thought it was the best incursion she had ever been involved in!!
So thankyou so
much!" St
Paul's Primary School, Mt Lawley
"A big thankyou to Kevin for his wonderful presentations to
our school. The feedback from staff and students has been
overwhelmingly positive. Your presentations have made a
lasting impression on the students, and have made a great platform for us
to move forward with our sustainability project."
Aleisha from Harvey Primary School
"I wanted to say a big
thank you personally for the incursion you held recently with the
years 3 and 5. The children absolutely loved the morning
and the worm farm has been a big hit with the rest of the school as
well. We are currently recycling the waste from the
canteen, so
already our waste has been
reduced."
Belinda Dodds, North
Cottesloe Primary School.
"The
students and staff are still talking about how fantastic an Incursion it
was. Everyone enjoyed the experience, & all are happy about
receiving their own worm farms. We have now made a large wormery
& the food scraps from our lunches are giving them a nutritious
diet".
